I really enjoy reading my kids blogs. They do such a good job. I think there super. I enjoy the time I spend with my kids and their families and my husband. I spend a lot of time, searching out information on our past families, while my children are moving forward with their families. I feel that both of these pursuits are very important. I want my kids to know their ancestors and those that have gone before them. I also want them to know that the Gospel of Jesus Christ means everything to me. This year I am serving in the Daughters of Utah Pioneers as a 2nd co-chairman. Darlene is president or chairman. Eileen Osborne and I help her and Lorraine Palmer is the Secretary. There are other women who serve and we could not do it with out each other. It is a fun organization. We get to learn about a pioneer each time we go to our meetings which are held the second Monday of each month September thru May. We are off for summer. We also learn about places and times the people lived in and some of the artifacts of that time. We enjoy fun music from that era and just have a good time together. In our group there are over 60 women. Most groups are much smaller. In fact we may be the largest group out there.
I am also President of UGA for the Cedar City Chapter. We are looking for new members. We have to have ten sign up to make it official, we have about 6 and more on the way. Our purpose will be to serve in different capacities our community to make research more convenient . We also want to help increase educational opportunities for those interested in family history.
In February I will be attending the St.George Expo and helping the UGA with their booth. This is on the 25th and 26th of the month in St. George at the Dixie Center. By the way. Dixie gets its name from the Covington families that settled in Washington, Washington, Utah. They came with the Cotton Mission. Robert Dockery Covington married Malinda Allison Kelley after her first husband and his first wife passed away. He then married Nancy who was a polygamous wife. Malinda helped to raise all the children including Alice who was a Indian child they rescued from being sold as a slave by men passing through. Alice lived to be about 15 when she died from one of the childhood diseases of the time. Malinda is my direct line grandmother and she would have been one of those who gave the place the name of Dixie. It would have been quite natural as Robert and Malinda were from the south.
This is a picture I took of the Covington Mansion that still exist in Washington County.
